Restart your job search with new perspective
NEW YORK, NY -- You've been searching for a new job for a long time but can't find the right one? Well, perhaps it is time to revisit your process. Finding the right job is not just about having a good resume and applying to various companies. It's about having the correct approach.
Time your application appropriately. Find out which companies are recruiting before you apply. To get the right fit, understand the needs of the market and learn to connect with the right people at the right time. Plan your moves smartly. Jumping at every opportunity is not the way to go. Your desperation becomes evident. Remember, you should apply for a position in a particular company because you want to do that job, and not because you are unemployed or are unhappy with your current job.
Be organized. An organized job hunt comprises a hard core structured plan of action. This includes mapping your career aspirations, understanding your requirements, your strengths/weaknesses, short listing companies/positions you are interested in, keeping track of the companies you have applied to and the status of the application, as well as time management and resume management. Following a disciplined routine is important for a successful job search.

These 2 words will doom your job search
LOS ANGELES, CA -- Procrastinate, according to Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, is "to put off intentionally and habitually the doing of something that should be done." Get to know what that word means and how is applies to your life. If you can call yourself a procrastinator, even with certain activities, you are negatively impacting your life goals. You will miss goals and quotas. You will attain less than your capability.
Nike says it best: ""Just do it." Just do what? ... Just do it. They mean you can do anything. Just go on and do it. You have an interview in two days. When are you going to check out your clothing to make sure everything is perfect? Now -- just do it -- now. You had an interview today. When are you going to send a hand-written thank you note? Thank you notes must be hand written and mailed or hand delivered within 24-hours of your interview. This is not a guideline. It is a rule. Just do it -- now.
Assume, according to the same dictionary, is "to pretend to have or be; to take as granted or true." Assumption, therefore, is "the supposition that something is true". Get to know what that word means and how is applies to your life. A friend told you that XYZ Corp. doesn't offer very good benefits, but you're perfect for a job opening there. Just get the interview and sell yourself. If you're good and if you're needed by XYZ, great benefits just may appear for you. Maybe not for your friend, but you are you, not your friend. Don't assume anything. Just do it -- now.
What the hiring manager wants to see
AUSTIN, TX -- As a hiring manager, the number one thing I'm looking for in a resume is not how pretty it looks and not how well you're able to use font types and sizes. Sure, when you make a resume it should be neat, clean and easy to read, but don't spend a lot of time on the physical appearance. What the hiring manager wants most is one thing: how well do your specific skills and experience match the requirements of the job. Everything else is of secondary importance.
As a hiring manager, I don't want to have to plow through your resume and guess what type of job you're looking for. When you make a resume, you should have already done your research and sent me your resume for the job I have open. The job posting almost always gives you the experience and qualifications required for the position.
Your resume needs to demonstrate that you have the right qualifications and experience. Remember... a hiring manager usually only looks at your cover letter and resume for about 30 seconds or less. If you don't grab me right away you won't be further considered.
Consider a more focused approach to your job search.
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA -- There's nothing easy about job searching. What's especially frustrating for many job seekers is a disappointing response rate. However, it's important to note that a job search is based on a numbers game. For example: If you get your resume in front of 1000 hiring managers, you should get 10-50 quality responses leading up to 5 interviews. If you don't pay attention to 'how' you are sending your resumes, your actions might only serve to put your resume in a pile with hundreds of others.
Consider a more focused approach to your job search. A search that increases the number and quality of responses by using a targeted list of industries and decision makers who are looking for people with your skills. This new type of search also employs an affordable delivery system that ensures your resume will be seen by the right person. Impossible?
Not at all! We recommend using a service called JobsByFax. This service is simple to use, effective and an affordable way to ensure a more focused and satisfying job search. It's never too late to start a new career
SALEM, NJ -- Allison Sabraw has a term for her life's latest chapter: "I'm re-careering," Sabraw said. For nearly 30 years, Sabraw's life was the world of sales and marketing. But like others who have lost their jobs, this 60-something is changing course and looking to a new career in health care as an activities coordinator for seniors. Sabraw talks about the course she's plotting with both passion and pragmatism. She sees a bright future for herself.
Throughout her career, she had prided herself on being in the right place at the right time. But as the economy tightened, then worsened, her business dried up and she was soon out of work. Suddenly, finding work had become a full-time job. She became single-minded about finding a new job in the same field. But months into her search, without any offers, she began to look at things from a different point of view. "One day, you scratch your head and say, Now it's time," she said. "I'd always felt flat in my job search. It wasn't until a few months back that I started shedding old habits and became more relaxed."
Sabraw sought out her local Career Center for its one-on-one career counseling and resume workshops. While she's seeking work, she has also enrolled in a couple computer courses to update her skills. She hopes to parlay her new-found skills into a new job or career. "Employed or not employed, it doesn't matter. How many people come home and hate their jobs?" she said. "To take a certain aspect of yourself and reinvent it - to me, that's exciting!"
Find the right school & increase your marketability!
NEW YORK, NY -- According to the U.S. Census Bureau the difference in lifetime earnings between a high school diploma and bachelor's degree is a million dollars. Add on a master's degree and you can expect to earn an additional half a million dollars in earnings. Those with professional degrees earn much more - about 4.4 million dollars during their working life.
Jennifer Day, Chief of the Education and Social Stratification Branch at the U.S. Census Bureau says, "In 1999, average annual earnings ranged from $19,000 for high school dropouts, to $26,000 for high school graduates, $45,000 for college graduates and $99,000 for the holders of professional degrees. That includes medical doctors, dentists, veterinarians and lawyers.
If you think that the only way to earn a degree is to spend gobs of money and traverse across a complicated college campus, taking anywhere from two to eight years to get your Associate's, Bachelor's or Master's or even doctorate degree...think again. With advances in technology, you can now get your degree online, from an accredited university in your spare time and from the comfort of your own home. Think creatively during your job search
SAN JOSE, CA -- In a tough economy, students and job seekers should look at the bigger picture when seeking a job. They need to start thinking more creatively. Here are some key job search tips which include broadening your job search and looking into alternative fields such as health care and government jobs.
First, it's important for job seekers to be realistic and just accept that you might end up with a job that is unrelated to your major. Working for nonprofit organizations and the Peace Corps are good alternative jobs to consider in a bad economy. Job seekers could learn a lot of job skills from the experience and they could use those skills to market themselves in the future. It's also recommended that job seekers should start looking as soon as possible for a job, because procrastinating the search could hinder the process.
You gotta set goals for yourself. This means a minimum of two hours a day. Treat your job search like a job itself. Lots of research and time is needed for job searching. Using the web is the best place to investigate a company, but should not be the only resource used. There are many great free job search tools to consider along with other tools that may cost a one time fee. Remember, even in a down economy, there are still millions of jobs available. Don't be too picky in a bad economy, get creative and look at the bigger picture.
